SEC FOOTBALL PREDICTIONS: WEEK 2

This sort of article only works if there is some sense of accountability. With that said this is how we are doing so far in 2017:

  • Last week: 11-3
  • Misses: South Carolina (won), Tennessee (won), Florida (lost)
  • Closest prediction: Missouri by 28. They won by 29 (72-43).
  • Worst prediction: Florida by 6. They lost by 16 (33-17).
  • Season so far: 11-3

Here are the SEC games for Week 2 of the season:

Saturday, September 9

(22) Florida vs. Northern Colorado – This is still going ahead despite the looming threat of Hurricane Irma. Feleipe Franks gets the nod despite the Gators insipid performance against Michigan on offense. The run game needs to wake up and Northern Colorado should be just the right opponent to get Florida back on track. Prediction – Florida by 28.

Kentucky vs. Eastern Kentucky – Kentucky was another team with offensive issues in Week 1, but their defense bailed them out against Southern Miss. The Wildcats front four is as good as any in the SEC East and they will shut down the EKU attack. Prediction – Kentucky by 17.

Ole Miss vs. UT Martin – UT Martin won last week and feature back Ladarius Galloway went for 157 yards in the victory. The game though was against Clarion. Ole Miss is not Clarion. Prediction – Mississippi by 40.

(1) Alabama vs. Fresno State – Alabama contented its place as the No. 1 team in the country with its comfortable win over Florida State on opening night. Fresno State opened up the season with a blowout 66-0 win against something called the Incarnate Word. The over/under should be on the Bulldogs attaining 66 yards against ‘Bama. Prediction – Alabama by 35.

Arkansas vs. (23) TCU - Both these squads appear to be better than last year after dominating wins first out. These two played one of the better – and crazier – games of 2016 with Arkansas squeaking out a three point win. Home advantage for the Hogs is key here. Prediction – Arkansas by 3.

(25) Tennessee vs. Indiana State - Tennessee is coming off of a short week where a team with one of the more difficult to prepare for offenses in the FBS took them to overtime. Thankfully they now play a school that can’t throw the ball and lost to Eastern Illinois. Prediction – Tennessee by 24.

Vanderbilt vs. Alabama A&M - Vandy will need to get its running game going – it went for just two yards per carry against Middle Tennessee – but the play of quarterback Kyle Shurmur last week has Commodores’ fans buzzing. Alabama A&M lost by 31 to a squad (UAB) that didn’t even have a football program last year. Prediction – Vanderbilt by 35.

(13) Auburn @ (3) Clemson -   Huge game time. If Auburn wants to be taken seriously as a contender for the College Football Playoff then this is a game the SEC Tigers need to win. Pressuring Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant will be the key to the game as he is an elite talent, but he is inexperienced at this level. Clemson beat Kent State 56-3 and looked like the best team in the ACC in the process, but Auburn can change that narrative with a big win here. Prediction – Auburn by 10.

Missouri vs. South Carolina - It is time for conference play (for some reason) as two teams in the seemingly wide open SEC East do battle. Missouri has the offense to walk to the SEC Championship Game, but a defense that let Missouri State go for roughly two thousand yards last weekend. South Carolina beat a CFP darkhorse in NC State to open the season, but still looks super conservative on offense. Prediction – Missouri by 10.

Texas A&M vs. Nicholls - Is it worrying to Texas A&M fans that Nicholls won last week with a field goal as time expired? It shouldn’t be, but the Aggies are a team that defies logic. Prediction – A&M by 42.

(12) LSU vs. Chattanooga – Chattanooga lost to Jacksonville State to open the season. Nothing to see here. Prediction – LSU by 38.

(15) Georgia @ (24) Notre Dame – With Jacob Eason set for some time on the sidelines with a knee injury it is going to be up to the tantented but raw Jake Fromm to keep the Bulldogs season on track. Starting your first college game in South Bend is going to be a massive test, so Georgia will need the rest of the offense – and especially the running game – to pick up the slack. Notre Dame’s new offense looked fantastic against Temple and suddenly this game looks very interesting. Prediction – Notre Dame by 5.

Mississippi State @ Louisiana Tech – This is an awkward game for Mississippi State. Louisiana Tech has an offense that can go and a defense that looked fantastic last weekend. This is going to be exactly the kind of 60 minute game that no Power 5 school wants this early in the season and the potential is there for it to be a bad day for the SEC school. Prediction – Louisiana Tech by 3.
